Bingo hearing over, ruling due by October 26

electronic bingo

The hearing to decide the legality of electronic bingo in Walker County ended shortly after lunch Thursday.

Judge Robert Vance asked for written briefs to filed by a week from Friday and he will issue his order by October 26th.

Vance heard two days of testimony this week to decide if electronic bingo can be played legally under Walker County constitutional amendment authorizing bingo.

District Attorney Charles Baker and Sheriff John Mark Tirey filed a lawsuit in 2007, asking a judge to declare if electronic charity bingo was legal in Walker County.

Nearly two dozen charity bingo halls and more than 300 charities are named as defendants in the lawsuit.

Judge Vance must first decide if the game of bingo can be played electronically and then rule whether Walker County machines qualify as illegal slot machines.

Vance’s ruling could impact the spread of electronic charity bingo in Jefferson County, according to District Attorney Brandon Falls.
